Most recently, Smith spent two years at Peregrine Systems, first as an area vice president and then later as general manager of its Telecommunications business unit. Smith was also a regional vice president at Sterling Software, where he managed its Professional Sales and Consulting Services organization for two geographic regions of its Application Development division.

His experience also includes seven years at Hewlett-Packard, where he progressed through the ranks from district manager to director of the company's Global Partners program. He also spent 14 years with Texas Instruments, where he was ultimately promoted to area manager of its Computer Systems division, with responsibility for its technical support and sales teams.
